On Working With The Residence Gallery at PULSE Miami... by Larry McGinity

PULSE Miami Contemporary Art Fair has carved a niche as one of Art Basel's largest satellite fairs, at The Ice Palace Studios in downtown Miami.

"PULSE is not just about a place within the art market, it's about making an art fair better," explained Director Cornell DeWitt, who continued "collectors come for the art, and stay for the enjoyment factor."

VIP ATTENDANCE
In 2010 the fair was a destination for some of the art world's premier celebrities, tastemakers and visionaries. Actors Adrien Brody and Isabella Rossellini; and singer Harry Connick Jr. turned heads as they perused the booths. The "who's who" of collectors included Eli Broad; Beth Rudin DeWoody; Tom Healy; Lady Monica Heftler of Monaco; Susan and Michael Hort; Toby Devan Lewis; Marty Marguiles; Brook Neidich; Jean Pigozzi; Mera Rubell; Alain Servais; Lillian Vernon; and Scott Westover of the Progressive Insurance Collection.

LIAM RYAN AND ROBERT HAWKINSAbove: Invite features Collaboration No. 2, oil on panel by Liam Ryan & Robert Hawkins, 2011

LIAM RYAN & ROBERT HAWKINS
6/10 - 30/10/11

Robert, like a magician, can make a serious train crash look like fun. This self-described "pseudo-realist" has been featured in many major international art collections. He is re-nouned for his macabre sense of humour, expert knowledge of Art History and Popular Culture, which reflects playfully in his work.

In comparison, Liam employs a degree of automatism and disorder of pictorial language. He also flirts with Popular Culture, disruptively, to create work that he sees as transparently synthetic. He explains, "I treat visual language in a playful way and it's the music of the language which interests me." Liam received the Royal Dublin Society Taylor Prize and earned an MA (St. Martin's Byam Shaw) with a scholarship awarded from Lismore Castle Arts.

SURVEY THE VISUAL ART OF JOEL GIBB

JOEL GIBB
8/07 - 31/07/11
PV Fri 8 July 7pm-9:30pm

Berlin-based Canadian artist and singer-songwriter Joel Gibb, who leads the "gay church folk" group The Hidden Cameras is exhibiting solo at The Residence Gallery throughout July.
Marking 10 years since Joel's first band performance in Residence Director Ingrid Z's Toronto gallery, Joel presents a survey of his emblematic felt banners reflecting the inherently linked journey through art and music.

"Conflating Pop, Folk, and religious tradition with influences from General Idea to
Hugo Ball, Gibb's cross- disciplinary oeuvre conveys notions about politics, pleasure,
mortality, and love."- ARTCAT.COM

"A coat of arms for the modern artist-singer-songwriter" - Time Out New York

"Something about the piece? Well it is my take on the coat of arms for the Ministry for
State Security (The Stasi) of East Germany in the tradition of some of my other pieces
like my take on the Canadian Flag. Maybe I should do a union jack this month and make
it an ass and dick...hmmmm" – Joel Gibb

FINE ART SOCIETY
SCREENING AND TALK:

Featuring filmmaker
TEREZA STEHLIKOVA

Fri 27 May 12pm-1pm

As the "Social Cinema" exhibition draws to a close, The Residence Gallery launches it's Fine Art Society. By creating an open space for sociable encounters and lively discussions about art, it seeks to build appreciation for art, while providing informal, non-directed art instruction; hence removing physical and psychological barriers commonly associated with contemporary art.

The inaugural event of The Residence Fine Art Society features two of Tereza Stehlíkowá's internationally screened films, followed by a talk with the director herself. Tereza works as a filmmaker, artist, writer and associate lecturer in animation. She is currently researching towards a PhD at the Royal College of Art in the tactile language of the moving image.

TREBUCHET
11/03 - 10/04/11

time outFEATURED AS TOP 5!
Time Out First Thursdays
reception:
7 April 7pm-9:30pm

In this striking exhibition of new works, Alexander Heaton departs from the artistic trends of his time to literally challenge forces of nature. Concerned with the idea of the wanderer, Heaton brings painting up to date from the traditions of the romantic Scandinavian and German painters of the 18th and 19th centuries. Coded in a language of spells and mantras, Heaton's paintings are exhibited in a specifically crafted environment within the gallery, transforming it into a völkisch abode of magical realism.
